Dangerous Drugs - Protopic
Protopic, otherwise known by its generic name, tacrolimus, is a cream approved for the treatment of eczema and is often prescribed off-label for psoriasis and dermatitis seborrhea. It was manufactured by Astellas Pharmaceuticals and approved by the FDA in 2000.
Side effects from the use of Protopic can be severe and include blurred vision, liver and kidney problems (the drug is nephrotoxic), seizures, tremors, hypertension, hypomagnesemia, diabetes mellitus, hyperkalemia, itching, insomnia, confusion, loss of appetite, hyperglycemia, weakness, depression, cramps, and neuropathy, as well as potentially increasing the severity of existing fungal or infectious conditions such as herpes zoster or polyoma viral infections.
Protopic and a related drug for eczema (pimecrolimus) are known to present a possible risk of cancer. The FDA issued a health warning in March 2005 for the drug, and as of January 2006, Protopic's label is now required to carry a black box warning of the risk of cancer.
