Dangerous Drugs - Interceed
Interceed is a drug used to reduce adhesions which can result from gynecologic surgery. It is applied as a dry, single layer between the location of the surgical trauma where adhesions may form. By creating a physical barrier, it prevents the area where it is applied from adhering to adjacent surfaces. Interceed was created by Johnson & Johnson and received FDA approval in September of 1989.
Interceed has been known to cause two health complications. First, when applied to bleeding tissue, the drug can take on a black discoloration due to exposure to hemoglobin. Second, the drug's effectiveness may fail in the presence of residual irrigation fluid during surgery, which can be exacerbated by a change in body position after the surgery is complete. Both health problems are associated with the chemical composition of the drug.
